Malcolm Appleby

Malcolm Appleby is the Conductor of the Scarborough Concert Band since 2003. He started his musical development playing the recorder in Primary School and then the clarinet at Senior School. Malcolm’s music teacher Ron Cole at Scalby Senior School encouraged him to to join the TA Band known as the 4/5th Green Howards Military Band when he was 15 years old. Malcolm is grateful to the Royal Marine Musicians, without whom he probably wouldn’t have carried on with music after he left school. The TA Band became the Scarborough Concert Band in 1968.

Outside Band, Malcolm spends time with his family. He is married for 53 years and has a daughter and a grandson.

Malcolm aspires to encourage anyone who would like to join the band at whatever age and in particular the younger generation, those who are at school and want to to develop their musical skills further. The band has given many young musicians a push in the right direction, seen them go on to further their skills and is proud of their achievements.
